What is green energy?

Types of green energy

1. Solar power

3. Hydropower

Also known as hydroelectric energy, hydropower is generated by harnessing the energy of flowing water. The most common way to produce this is by storing water in a dam and purging the water by opening an intake.

4. Biogas

Biogas makes use of waste products such as sewage, food, agricultural waste, and more. When these products decompose, they produce a variety of gases that can be used to produce electricity.

5. Biomass

Biomass also comes from plants and animals, which contain energy from the sun. This energy is converted into liquid biofuels that have a variety of uses.

6. Geothermal energy

Huge amounts of thermal energy exist naturally just below the earth’s crust, and this can be converted into electricity to power our homes. 

Benefits of green energy

Now that we have answered the question let’s take a look at its benefits. It benefits the earth and environment, the wider community, and your bank account. 

The main reason for the increase in green energy over recent years is that it is better for the environment. Materials traditionally used for energy such as coal and oil pollute the environment and atmosphere. They release greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change and global warming.

Green energy produces little to no greenhouse gases; therefore it slows down global warming and keeps our environment significantly cleaner. The more we use green energy, the more we reduce carbon emissions. 

As well as helping to save mother earth from global warming, using green energy improves the quality of the air that we breathe. Harmful gases produced by fossil fuels can pose health risks, so green energy can save lives. In addition, the process of extracting coal and oil can be detrimental to the environment and local communities

Furthermore, traditional energy sources such as coal and oil are non-renewable. This means that they will run out, and supplies are dwindling. Whereas green energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro are produced naturally and are therefore renewable.

Green energy also has the potential to create jobs, benefitting both Australia’s economy and the global economy. 

In addition, after an initial investment in installing systems, green energy is free. It has the potential to significantly reduce future electricity prices, or even give you independence from the energy grid. 

The easiest way to source green energy at home is via solar panels, which can be used to provide some or all of the power that your home needs. What’s more, if you produce more solar energy than you require, you can sell the excess back to the grid and make some extra cash.
